[Pkg-firebird-general] Packaging Firebird2 (1.5) URGENT

Hi everyone,

The story is short:

If Firebird2 (1.5) is not packaged and is not serious-bugs-free before
the end of this month, the chances of getting it into Sarge will get
*very* small.

I'd say it is the last call to do it. Given that Firebird 1.0.x is not
of interest of developers anymore and Debian makes new release once
every 2 years, it means that Debian will be stuck with only the old
version for next 2 years.

I have personal experiences of this kind. The Firebird 1.0.x packages
are NOT in Woody, because I missed the deadline by 2 weeks. And it
happened just because ftpmaster kept the packages in NEW queue for
too long, so it was not dependant on me. I really would hate to see
something similar happening to Firebird2 packages, especially, that
FB2 is *SO* much easier to build!!!

For consideration,

PS: Just to avoid a common mistake - I think current "firebird" packages
should stay at 1.0.x version, as they are. Firebird 1.5 should be
packaged separately as "firebird2" (source) package. It would probably
be next to impossible to ensure (automatic) smooth upgrades from 1.0.x
to 1.5, not to mention that I expect firebird2 binary packages layout
to be much different from the one I used for packages of 1.0.x version.
By introducing new packages we also ensure that at least 1.0.x will
make it into Sarge.
