[pkg-firebird-general] Packages of firebird2-2.0 (rc4) available for tests

Hi, everybody,

After much delay, I've finally prepared debian packages of 2.0 branch
of firebird. They can be reached at [1]. This is the RC4 release from
13th of August.

These packages conflict with 1.5.3 series, so if you want to give your
databases a try (strongly encouraged), backup them with 1.5.3 *before*
installing 2.0 packages.

Please give these a hard time testing and don't forget to send
feedback to <pkg-firebird-general at lists.alioth.debian.org>. Reading
Release Notes[2] would help avoiding common problems.

The future: After your comments, 2.0 will need a sponsor to get in the
archive. Finding a sponsor for such a complex package would not be
easy and will take time so we may have to wait a couple of months
before 2.0 gets into the official debian archive.

My plan is to make an attempt to push FB2.0 in Etch (due in
December'06), but that push will not be too hard. I am not sure
whether 2.0 is well-enough tested to enter a stable release (this is
why I need your feedback). We'll see, but there will be no rush to get
it in Etch on any cost.

So the most probable plan is to ship Etch with 1.5 only. 2.0 lives in
unstable and eventually backports.org. After Etch release, I intent to
remove 1.5 from unstable (if 2.0 behaves good enough. no rush at all)
and go for 2.0-only in Etch+1.

This plan is just a plan, so if you have concerns, please, speak up.
