I hope I got this right.

What I don't understand is if you have problems connecting using
IBExpert (or isql, or flamerobin) from a Windows machine on which the
original firebird client is installed and no Yaffil was ever installed
(to possibly isolate problem from Yaffil client library).

If even in this situation the problem persists, then it is related to
the server configuration somehow and I'd like to know what happens if:
a) you comment out all lines in /etc/hosts.equiv except for the
localhost entry and restart the server
b) replace super-server with classic

You may already know this, but did you notice that firebird2-*
packages are actually 1.5.3? Not that I beleive this is particularly
relevant to the problem at hand, but may save you a lot of burden in
case your intention was to get 2.0 packages installed.
