Your experience shows that the wire protocol is not 100% compatible
with 1.5 indeed. Whether this the case for fb2.0 I can't tell (yet).

The name was chosen by previous debian maintainer about two years ago,
when we had "firebird" package (version 1.0). Version 1.5 was a major
change, so he changed the package name. firebird2 looked like a good
choice, since 1.5 was planned as a intermediate release before 2.0.
2.0, however was developed for longer than expected and ended being
not 100% compatible with 1.5.

So the plan for 2.0 packages is to name them firebird2-2.0 and make
them co-installable with 1.5 packages, making migration as smooth as
possible.

Preliminary fb2.0 packages should be available later this week. I'll
post here when ready.
