You seem to be confusing things. Classic-server does not use /etc/init.d
scripts. It is started by [x]inetd on demand. I hope this explains your
observations. The init script is there after a previous super-server
installation.

By the way, firebird2, which is actually version 1.5, will not be
present in the next Debian release so I strongly suggest you prepare a
migration plan. I'll upload firebird2.0 packages to backports.org some
day to help this.
