Following steps 1-4 solved this problem for one video.  If I tried to view a 
second video I had the original problem.  Even trying to go back and view the 
first video a second time wouldn't work.

I should note that I did not have a $HOME/.gnashpluginrc directory.

Blocking all cookies solves this problem for all videos on youtube.

Blocking all cookies is a decent workaround, but probably not a good permanent 
solution, as you have already indicated.
