I still have no idea on how to find out what is wrong, so thanx for the offer

asked this on IRC and apparently somebody else experienced crashes like the
ones you describe when trying new versions of Dejavu via "cp $TTF_FILE $TTF_DIR"; 
proper installs (i.e. not performed manually) fixed it.

Let's see if we can narrow the problems down a bit more.
