I cannot confirm that using the dictd server together with the dict client:

From English-Russian FreeDict Dictionary ver. 0.2.1 [fd-eng-rus]:

  free /friː/
   безвозмездны҄; бесплатны҄

From English-Russian FreeDict Dictionary ver. 0.2.1 [fd-eng-rus]:

  fragrant /frəgrənt/

I hope the Russian signs didn't get destroyed because of my tty.

I cannot confirm your problem with dictd and dict. Please install dictd and use
one of the suggested clients and see if the problem remains. If not, please
report.
