I think the file /etc/freevo/local_conf.py should contain an 
example line for MPLAYER_VO_DEV,

   # MPLAYER_VO_DEV = 'xv' # e.g.: x11,mga,fbdev, see mplayer docs ,

as you can find in /usr/share/freevo/freevo_config.py .
