Exactly, this is why I want to switch to prerm/postinst.

The major problem I found is that neither at prem nor at postinst dpkg
sets a variable containing the package version number.  This means that
the latter should be hardcoded at package creation.  After some stupid
errors from my part, I finally committed it [1], hope Timo is now happy!

The new kernel package is building :-D
