You mean, so that the user can not delete the .xsession without
installing an xterm?

But then, people wanting to use nodm for there Debian system in their
digital picture frame will need to install an xterm, although they
probably don’t want to? I think, since nodm aims for embedded devices,
it should be left to the user.

On the FreeRunner it’s no problem, because the default installation
installs an xterm
