I upgraded just before the issue arose. The install is perhaps a month old.
The quick FIX was installing the Debian kernel 2.6.29 as it contains lots of ttys.

I suppose I should have looked for newer kernel versions after/while I did the upgrade :)

(now I am having problems with wifi (I seem to remember something about wifi and 2.6.29), but it is not a show stopper)
