FYI, I just noticed on my NSLU2 that depmod is run in the kernel’s
postinst, not during the build:

Richte linux-image-2.6.26-2-ixp4xx ein (2.6.26-15lenny3) ...
Running depmod.
Finding valid ramdisk creators.
Using mkinitramfs-kpkg to build the ramdisk.
Running postinst hook script flash-kernel.
