FWIW this is a stock Debian kernel.

This was already discussed at:

The depmod command from the install.sh script was removed when the
Debian kernel package was firstly added:

I am for moving depmod at kernel installation stage (where it belongs),
but I have not found the time yet to do it and IMHO there are more
important issues WRT the kernel:
