Mine is a 2GB Kingston, with these prints on it:

 0824U07702Y
 SD-C02G JAPAN
 SDC/2GB 36

And look at that, I've now found a wiki page that wasn't there before:

So it looks like it's card specific.  I have now sent a mail to the
other person with the same problem asking what is their brand of sd
card.

Allright, time to look for a different microsd. Unfortunately it seems
that the table at http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Supported_microSD_cards
is rather full of blank spaces.
