D'oh! After writing my mails yesterday and before going to bed I
realized that I also had the "jumping pointer" effect e.g. in
tangogps.

I've now tried:

1)
deanna:~# cat /etc/udev/rules.d/66-xorg-tslib.rules
ACTION!="add|change", GOTO="xorg_tslib_end"
KERNEL!="event*", GOTO="xorg_tslib_end"

ENV{ID_INPUT_TOUCHSCREEN}=="?*", ENV{x11_driver}="tslib"

LABEL="xorg_tslib_end"

and

2) in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
commenting out the whole InputDevice section
(and the reference to it in some other section -- I guess I need to
clean up this file again)

... and it works!
(Still without hal, and with fbdev instead of glamo.)

deanna:~# xinput list
Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)]
  Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)]
  "PS2++ Logitech MX Mouse" id=9 [slave pointer (2)]
Virtual core keyboard id=3 [master keyboard (2)]
    Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5 [slave keyboard (3)]
    "Power Button" id=6 [slave keyboard (3)]
    "Sleep Button" id=7 [slave keyboard (3)]
    "AT Translated Set 2 keyboard" id=8 [slave keyboard (3)]

After restarting X with glamo instead of fbdev it still works.

So I'd say:
Gilles, thanks for tracking this down.
Steffen, go for the install.sh change.

Cheers,
gregor
