The rootfstype enforcement was to make sure, that the
ext4 driver is not used for the ext2/3 rootfs.
IIRC there was a bug in the ext4 driver, which made the system
unbootable if one had a cyclic symlink (e.g. /boot/boot -> /boot).
I guess it should be ok to set rootfstype=ext3 or remove
it (which would remove ootb support for old kernels).
