AFAIK there are already efforts to upgrade Maemo5 to a newer (Debian-) base:
  http://wiki.maemo.org/User:Aapo/Waemo/Status

This is a step-by-step effort and will hopefully lead to a Fremantle
system, based on a currentely supported Debian.
