Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal

Hi,

This is a removal request for the FSO stack, which
is no longer maintained upstream. I kept it compiling
with newer vala releases for quite some time, but no
longer see any purpose in it (the stack recently broke
again with new Vala 0.36 upload #871058, #871119). It
mainly supports the old Openmoko Freerunner and requires
quite some configuration effort to be useful. Also the UI
parts have been broken for a few years without anyone caring
enough to fix it (#853504, #773586). There is an alternative
modem middle layer available in Debian, that is still
actively being developed: ofono. Getting that working
with telepathy-ring and some telepathy UI should be much
simpler and more future-proof than trying to maintain
the FSO + SHR stack.

Thus I request to remove the following packages from sid.
All of them are maintained by the "Debian FSO team", which
is effectively me nowadays.

 * fso-datad
 * fso-deviced
 * fso-frameworkd
 * fso-gsmd
 * fso-usaged
 * libphone-ui
 * libphone-ui-shr
 * libphone-utils
 * libshr-glib
 * openbmap-logger
 * phonefsod
 * phoneui-apps
 * phoneuid
 * python-phoneutils
 * shr-specs
 * fso-common
 * fso-gpsd
 * fso-gsm0710muxd
 * yue-sounds-fso

That leaves the following packages from the core FSO
stack, since the audio daemon is still useful for providing
audio support on Nokia N900 in combination with ofono.

 * fso-specs
 * libfsoframework
 * libfso-glib
 * libcmtspeechdata
 * libgsm0710
 * fso-audiod

I executed the following on mirror.ftp-master.debian.org and no dependency
problems have been found:

dak rm -Rn fso-datad fso-deviced fso-frameworkd fso-gsmd fso-usaged \
libphone-ui libphone-ui-shr libphone-utils libshr-glib openbmap-logger \
phonefsod phoneui-apps phoneuid python-phoneutils shr-specs fso-gpsd \
fso-common fso-gsm0710muxd yue-sounds-fso
