This problem is now fixed in the darkplaces engine svn, used by nexuiz.

Status in “nexuiz” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed

Bug description:
After upgrade to Ubuntu 8.10 nexuiz doesn't display bot players in one player game. 

Using recommended install of nvidia drivers. 

File of gameplay available if necessary, although currently only viewable in nexuiz, so probably not good evidence.
