Hi David

I haven't edited the file at all. All i have done is install Ubuntu and
install some apps. The sound wasn't working so I read some forums and
found that this fixed the problem. As I said some had no sound, some
were jerky and some were fine.

So why not use this file to fix the same problems for others?

Andy

P.S I have attached my /etc/openal/alsoft.conf file.

Status in “openal-soft” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

Bug description:
Ubuntu 10.04

Many applications and games have sound issues as default, such as no sound, jerky sound or freezes because of sound issues. Here are some applications that refused to work on my machine:

Assault Cube
NeverBall
NeverPutt
Supertux 1 and 2
Vdrift (can also crash because of this issue)
FlightGear
SuperTuxKart
and many more.

I only found out the reason when running FlightGear it came up and said No OSS driver installed. But I don't use OSS!

So I searched around the net and found that if you create a file in the home directory of the user eg. (/home/andy/) called '.alsoftrc' and then put inside 'drivers = alsa' all the issues become fixed! I now don't have any sound issues on machine at all whereas many applications used to not work.

Surely this can be easily fixed for a release and save many users loads of time. Also I guess that if you change the value you can choose which driver to use.

I have included the file as an attachment.
