Since you're modifying the Ubuntu configuration, your bug will probably
be converted into a question.

Did you completely remove pulseaudio from your system? If not, you
should try an updated version of libopenal1 that fixes a lot of
pulseaudio issues: https://launchpad.net/~dtl131/+archive/mediahacks

If you just need to set openal to use ALSA:

cd ~/
gedit .alsoftrc

Paste this:
[general]
drivers = alsa

Save, quit, log out. Log back in and try again.

I changed the default PulseAudio backend in Lucid to ALSA. Wine works, most games (like Supertux2) works; however, in OpenArena I have no sound.
