This bug affects me.  I'm using an Intel i910 and running Ubuntu Lucid.
This bug seems to be a conscious decision by the Xorg developers.

Image is too dark in openarena 0.8.1-6 in Lucid (Development)
Regulating image brightness from System > Display > Brightness (in-game settings) does not have any effect.
