I also have experienced the exact same crash.  It happens exactly when
you end your first turn with Lucid 10.04 LTS and freecol 0.8.4.

The problem seems to freecol and openjdk in this version of Ubuntu.  My
quick solution was to remove openjdk and install the Sun JDK.  No
problems so far but hopefully this change doesn't affect the rest of my
system.

Bug description:
Binary package hint: freecol

When I try to play a game in freecol runs properly until I end the first turn upon which the game crashes.

The Error Log is attached.

Java Info:
JRE version: 6.0_18-b18

When I run freecol in terminal I receive the following:
