i would prefer if was possible to install a somewhat usable setup from
within debian/ubuntu -- including song and thus packaging the available
songs (even if it were only the libre ones).

users would still be wondering how they could add "their" songs and be
in the same position as the are now (except for the mentioned message).
plus having the BIG advantage of already having something "minimally
useful". if the missing message is a big problem then create a patch
that displays that message if there are less than ten songs.

and maybe include some information in the manpage.

Status in “performous” package in Ubuntu: New

Bug description:
Binary package hint: performous

performous does not include any game content (i.e. songs, ...) and is thus quite unusable after installation.
there should be packages for at least the free songs listed at http://performous.org/songs.html and these packages should be required or recommended/suggested by performous.

the documentation concerning "you first need to get some songs before using performous" should be improved!
