The upstream feature list is :

*   new graphics engine using irrlicht
*   new GUI
*   kart and track animations
*   new and improved tracks, karts, and items
*   shortcut/alternative way support for tracks
*   Include Asian fonts
*   many many bugfixes. 

I am not overly familiar with the Ubuntu process so I will let Christoph
complete; but I can say that this version is worth updating since it
contains a lot of bug fixes, new contents, and translations into new
languages
