This is because the master server for this old version of the game has
been shut down, so the core issue is that the package is out of date.

Status in “assaultcube” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: assaultcube

  The current AssaultCube version (1.0.4) is unplayable in network mode
  because it is totally outdated. The master server reject it.  There is
  no way to join a server and play (the package useless if it stay on
  this old version).

  
  To reproduce the bug: Try to join a server. You can't!
