A few days ago I experienced the same as Enrico did. 
Unfortunately, it is now nearly impossible to play this game. 
May be I am wrong, but the balls seemed for me to run a little more smoothly now.

Bug description:
  Hello,

  I'm running foobillard on Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise). On april 2013 there
  was an update of the kernel to 3.2.0-40-generic.

  Since then, it's hardly possible to see the table, the side of the
  carpet became too dark to see the table details. There is only the
  central spot of the table which kept the original colors. see the
  image.

  With the previous kernel there was no such problem.

  Many thanks for any action you could take to solve this problem. It's
  a nice game which is worth a try.
