Looks like x-plane needs to be rebuilt against libopenal.so.1 using pkg-
config to point to the right library location.

Many other applications (steam, wildmidi and etc.) are capable of doing
this without a problem.

Status in openal-soft package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  First install with synaptic openal.

  Then cd to the directory with libopenal and link like above:

  ln -s libopenal.so.1 libopenal.so

  
  This is needed for x-plane on Ubuntu. So what century are you in, 19th?
