Hi Charles,
My apologies for not responding to that bugreport. I wrongly believed
that same issue already had a wontfix bugreport with that issue
discussed in details (don't know if those discussions are then in
private mails or only in my head).
In the past, linking against libxpm pulled in 50+ MB of (un)related X11
packages, and since GD primarily is used with web apps I chose to
provide a noxpm variant to allow for a smaller disk usage on web
servers.
But as I mention above, I recently discovered that the X11 dependency
mess apparently have been worked out and only a few MBs are getting
pulled in now. So I now agree that there is not enough reason for
multiple flavors, complicating dependency handling of all GD-related
packages.
I am not subscribed to -devel (I believe I got auto-unsubscribed due to
massive backscatter at some point, but deliberately did not re-subscribe
as I realized how that missing mailinglist helped spend a bit more time
with my family)
I would appreciate help getting the transition right. And I would be
interestd in help generally maintaining the GD libraries, if you don't
mind using Git and CDBS.
Kind regards,
- Jonas
