Hi,

I am quite sure this is not a libgd3 fault as I have both installed

ii libgd3:amd64
  2.2.4-2+deb9u2 amd64
           GD Graphics Library
ii libgd3:i386
   2.2.4-2+deb9u2 i386
            GD Graphics Library

Installing both libgd3:i386 and libgd3:amd64 on unstable works as well:

# apt-get install libgd3:i386 libgd3:amd64
[...]
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  fontconfig-config fonts-dejavu-core gcc-7-base:i386 libbsd0 libbsd0:i386
libc6:i386 libexpat1 libexpat1:i386 libfontconfig1 libfontconfig1:i386
libfreetype6 libfreetype6:i386 libgcc1:i386 libgd3 libgd3:i386 libjbig0
libjbig0:i386 libjpeg62-turbo libjpeg62-turbo:i386 liblzma5:i386
libpng16-16 libpng16-16:i386
  libtiff5 libtiff5:i386 libwebp6 libwebp6:i386 libx11-6 libx11-6:i386
libx11-data libxau6 libxau6:i386 libxcb1 libxcb1:i386 libxdmcp6
libxdmcp6:i386 libxpm4 libxpm4:i386 ucf zlib1g:i386

Could you investigate a little more why it can't be installed on your
system? Either some other package is causing that or you are mixing
external repositories that have broken packages or your system is broken in
some other way.

Cheers,
Ondrej
