Well, not all packagers share this opinion. For example, debian-kde always 
tracks the development of the branch, even when there's no release for a 
longer period of time. This is why I asked.

I don't think we will make a release incorporating all the cumulated patches, 
unless there are really many of them. With the little manpower we have, we 
better concentrate on trunk.

Anyway, the translation licence issue is solved, and the translations will 
enter both trunk and branch.
