Try entering "http://www.Fluß.de" into any recent browser, and it will
automatically be converted to "http://www.fluss.de".
The reason behind the canonicalisation is that conflicts between owners of
these two domains can be prevented, and that spelling variants do not result
in an error.
Similar advantages can be achieved for usernames.
Stringprep is based on profiles, e.g. one per language. The IDN (domain name)
stringprep profile doesn't convert "ä" to "ae", for example, although we
would make use of that in GGZ. It's nonsense that "www.mueller.de" is
different from "www.müller.de" for the average user.
