I am not sure whether I'm understanding this correctly.  You are saying
that the GPM curses wrapper function actually breaks ncurses?  Or,
breaks ncurses's own gpm integration, which apps would like to use but
can't in Debian?

If that's true, we'll disable it.

PS. The "spurious runtime dependency" is, IMHO, unimportant.
libncurses5 is already required by bash, so it's not like you
can run a Debian system with a missing or broken ncurses.
