Package: gpm
Version: 1.17.8-18
Severity: normal
I have a Dell Latitude CPi D266XT laptop, with the usual sort of
touchpad. I initially had gpm configured in PS/2 mode, but recently
discovered that it also works correctly when I configure gpm to use
the (much more featurly) synaptics (synps2) driver.
Unfortunately, if I do a suspend and then a resume, the touchpad stops
responding (though my external USB mouse keeps working, if I've
started gpm with the appropriate "-M ..." option), and I start seeing
the following type of message in /var/log/daemon.log:
Jul 19 01:27:54 red apmd[161]: User Suspend
Jul 19 01:28:15 red apmd[161]: Normal Resume after 00:00:21 (82% 2:58) Battery power
Jul 19 01:28:38 red /usr/sbin/gpm[462]: tossing PS/2 data:
Jul 19 01:28:38 red /usr/sbin/gpm[462]: 08
Jul 19 01:28:38 red /usr/sbin/gpm[462]: AA
Jul 19 01:28:38 red /usr/sbin/gpm[462]: 55
Jul 19 01:28:38 red /usr/sbin/gpm[462]: 00
Jul 19 01:28:38 red last message repeated 2 times
Jul 19 01:28:38 red /usr/sbin/gpm[462]: tossing PS/2 data:
Jul 19 01:28:38 red /usr/sbin/gpm[462]: 01
Jul 19 01:28:38 red /usr/sbin/gpm[462]: AA
Jul 19 01:28:38 red /usr/sbin/gpm[462]: 55
Jul 19 01:28:38 red /usr/sbin/gpm[462]: 00
Jul 19 01:28:38 red last message repeated 2 times
(Note that I didn't touch the touch pad right away, but waited a bit,
in this particular example.)
Here are the interesting bits of /etc/gpm.conf:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
device=/dev/psaux
responsiveness=
type=synps2
repeat_type=ms3
append="-S /sbin/halt:/sbin/reboot:/usr/local/sbin/telinit2 -M -m /dev/input/mice -t imps2"
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Possible theory: this particular laptop model appears to have a dodgy BIOS,
at least when it comes to APM; I'm also experiencing conflicts between
pcmcia-cs and apmd... Thus I would suspect that the touch pad is
somehow being reset into PS/2 mode by the bios during suspend/resume.
Perhaps a workaround would be to have gpm re-set it to synaptics mode
upon resume, or (if that's not pratical, since I don't know how it
could detect that) upon receiving errors such as the above.
(I would be happy to test out any modified versions of gpm, but note
that I must be able to get them to build on a stock 'potato' system.
I can also provide strace output if that's of any use.)

Changes:
gpm (1.19.6-18) unstable; urgency=low
.
[ Joshua Kwan ]
* remove myself from Uploaders, I won't be active on as much stuff due
to impending school year.
.
[ Guillem Jover ]
* Fix typo in gpmconfig legacy notice. (Closes: #268573)
Thanks Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña <jfs@computer.org>.
* Added French debconf translation. (Closes: #268111)
Thanks to Christian Perrier <bubulle@debian.org>.
* Reintroduce conditional gpm_has_mouse_control use in postinst.
* Make gpm responsive again on some notebooks by start and stopping
on apm resume/suspend cycles. (Closes: #273501, #105842)
* Make libgpm less verbose to not print error messages when the
required devices cannot be opened. (Closes: #139533, #168116)
* Merged patches:
- debian/patches/011_debuglog_fix_000: Moved into ...
- debina/patches/001_logging_000: ... here.
* Removed unneeded Build-Depends on libncurses5-dev.
.
[ Peter Samuelson ]
* Add lintian source overrides for prerm/postrm not having debhelper
hooks. Unfortunately, dh_installinit does the wrong thing there.
* postinst: 'test -e' fails for dangling symlink, use 'test -h' as well.
(Closes: #268766)
* Added Czech debconf translation. (Closes: #275336)
Thanks to Jan Outrata <outrataj@upcase.inf.upol.cz>
* Configure --without-curses. Apparently nobody uses libgpm curses
support. This made it awkward for ncurses to be compiled with libgpm
support, which is apparently much more useful. (Closes: #274673)
