 So, I had a look at the faulty plugin, in the hope to isolate a test
 case from the gconf related registration code, but I didn't find any
 weirdness or registration specificity.
   Hence, I suspect GConf in general is borken, either for m68k
 altogether, or for your host/setup in particular.

 For now, instead of writing a sample program, I propose you try to run
 "gconftool-2 -R /" from the environment where gst-register hangs.
 Please let me know whether this command hangs too.

 FYI, the GConf support is quite important for GStreamer apps in order
 to obtain the audio and video configuration from the GConf registry.
