Bah. It was because alsa-base was not installed. Thanks for the
explanation.

It should really be brought in by gstreamer0.10-alsa when you install
it. Could we have a Recommends on alsa-base, maybe even alsa-utils so
that we get sound volume save upon reboot, as well?
