Debian testing is currently frozen, waiting for the stretch release.
We'll update the packages once stretch is released.

I think we should go this way in the future, but currently the
upstream git and the packaging git are unrelated. The upstream branch
is made from tarballs.

Yes, of course. Ask us if you need an advice. I can give you rights on
the repos, if you feel conformtable by pushing your commits there.
