Great, I find it quite nice. Thanks for your efforts. Now that it is
so nice and informative, maybe we should mention it in README.Debian
or something like that.

Did you also "chmod g+s" all directories?

Actually, the most fool-proof way is to do it like for our GNU Arch
repository, with a filesystem ACL.
http://www.fnds.cs.ru.nl/fndswiki/Using_GNU_Arch contains (near the
end) an example of the commands to run.
