Yes, I am just waiting for libbson and libmongoc to leave experimental.
And to the upstream release that won't bundle libbson and libmongoc and
use external libraries without using private symbols. That should happen
quite soon - the extension should be already packaged in git...

I don't think so, as there this:
https://github.com/mongodb/mongo-php-library to provide a similar
compatible layer on top of mongodb.
