At every printing hplip reports the status saying that the ink is empty. 
This is shown for example in the print dialogue of Iceweasel that shows the
printer status in its print dialog in the 'general' tab.

The message shown is:

Printer 'Photoshart_D5460' is low on at least one marker supply.
