According to the code and comment, it does check whether surrounding
text is supported or not.

I tested th-tis820 and th-kesmanee with gnome-terminal under Debian
Squeeze.  Typing "db-" produced a reasonable result, but the vowel sign
(SARA I, U+0E34) appeared only after "-" was typed.
