I've been using ibus-m17n for a week and a bit using my own package
(http://harshula.com/debian/) and I have no problems typing in Sinhala
using the m17n Sinhala layouts.

Which m17n MIM file did you test? Was it zh-pinyin.mim (PinYin)? If so
