Yes, there's a bug open that requests full GNU compatibility, but
unfortunately it's been sitting there for a while.

What prevents this is that the Solaris .po and .mo files are
incompatible with the GNU ones and we don't want to break
compatibility.  So the Solaris gettext tools and APIs support
both po and mo formats.
