Initial Comment:
As a pycountry user this is a problem. Some of our legacy data contains 'SU' as the country information of someone born in the USSR but with the recent JSON data  we have no way of knowing that this is the USSR.

Please consider adding the alpha_2 codes there. Based on the table on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-3 they are part of the standard after all.
