This is not a problem for Debian, because the architecture-specific
packages are built by the build daemons.

On the other hand, I think that your idea of building the .slc files
at install time is not only good but mandatory.  I just realized that
the *.slc files currently in the jed-extra package do not work with jed
0.99.17.95. 

I will eventually change the jed-extra package to also generated the
.slc files at install time.
