I have been using this package for ages and it works perfectly for me.

I would like to try gdbmrecent.sl from the jedmodes (BTW, will it be
included in jed-extra?). However, it depends on the slgdbm module, which
is not in Debian. I could consider packaging it, though, and this
brings me to another question: is there a place in Debian for installing
SLang modules? It seems that all the modules distributed with the SLang
tarball (fcntl newt pcre png select slsmg termios, and varray) are simply
ignored in Debian.
