They are still relatively new and I did not decide an where to place them:

1. alongside the mode files in src/mode/<modename>/<modename-test>.sl

2. in a test suite, e.g. src/tests/<modename-test>.sl

3. in the jed-extra SVN

If we find out how to configure Jed to "emulate" the situation after
installing of jed-extra, yes. 

At present, I run the test suite:

1. before commiting changes to Jedmodes CVS from my personal copy,

2. after installing a jed-extra pre-release with 

   jed -n -l ./do-unittests.sl
