Just to follow up, after talking with Guilherme yesterday I uploaded new
packages for sid and experimental fixing all those config file relocation
errors (and some other minor things). The -29 packages have now been
successfully built for alpha and sparc so, unless there are other serious
bugs reported to them they should proceed into testing in 5 days [1]
Also, there are only 11 bugs (2 pending and fixed in CVS, 8 minor and 1
Normal which is #79831). As for 79831 I believe it does not currently
apply. I believe you can run john as a non-root user perfectly fine.
Actually, I just did the following:
[ Note: under /tmp ]
$ htpasswd -c passwdfile test
New password:
Re-type new password:
Adding password for user test
$ john passwdfile
Loaded 1 password (Standard DES [48/64 4K])
test (test)
guesses: 1 time: 0:00:00:00 100% (1) c/s: 64.00 trying: test - test,
[ Note : john is in the PATH ]
$ export PATH=/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/games
$ rm -f john.pot restore
$ /usr/sbin/john passwdfile
Loaded 1 password (Standard DES [48/64 4K])
test (test)
guesses: 1 time: 0:00:00:00 100% (1) c/s: 64.00 trying: test - test,
So I will close that bug now

Javier
