Just a little bit more info on this, I am using Suse 9.1, 64bit with the vaious 2.6 kernels and it is happening here as well ( SBlive 5.1) , kde 3.3.1 and now 3.3.2.

So I do not think it is specifically a 2.4 kernel problem, it did not appear until I updated KDE.
